Friday Features: Immigration
UU Society of Geneva
On Friday, April 26,2024, at 7:00 p.m. the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva will host a presentation on Recent Immigration from Central and South America by Dianha Ortega-Ehreth, Executive Director of the Centro de Informacion in Elgin. Ms. Ortega-Ehreth will speak about:
How new migrants from Central and South America differ from other Spanish speaking immigrants who have been coming to the Chicago area for years. What is prompting people from these areas to leave their home countries?
How many migrants cross the border illegally, as opposed to those who enter seeking asylum. What is the process for seeking asylum and how long does it take?
The journey migrants endure to come to the US. What happens after they turn themselves in to Border Patrol?
How the Centro de Informacion helps migrants once they arrive in the Chicago area. What amount of increase have they experienced in the past year or so?
Ms. Ortega-Ehreth has been the Executive Director of Centro de Informacion in Elgin since 2022. She was born in Mexico and has lived in several places throughout the Midwest. She has served on a number of Boards and in other leadership roles throughout the Chicago area. She is also dedicated to lifelong learning and leadership development, DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion), and building strong teams and community partnerships in order to help Centro deliver excellence in its mission every day.
The presentation will also be live on Zoom. Link here.
